Light emission from particle beam induced plasma: An overview
نویسنده
چکیده
Experiments to study the light emission from plasma produced by particle beams are presented. Fundamental aspects in comparison with discharge plasma formation are discussed. It is shown that the formation of excimer molecules is an important process. This paper summarizes various studies of particle beam induced light emission and presents the first results of a direct comparison of light emission induced by electronand ion beam excitation. Both high energy heavy ion beam and low energy electron beam experiments are described and an overview over applications in the form of light sources, lasers, and ionization devices is given.

Beam emission spectroscopy measures electron density from the Doppler-shifted light emission of a heating beam excited by beam-plasma particle collisions [1]. From the measured light intensity one can calculate the electron density after proper calibration. If sufficient light is available, this technique enables us the study of electron density fluctuations and their spatial distribution via t...
متن کاملHigh energy density plasma science with an ultrarelativistic electron
An intense, high-energy electron or positron beam can have focused intensities rivaling those of today’s most powerful laser beams. For example, the 5 ps ~full-width, half-maximum!, 50 GeV beam at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center ~SLAC! at 1 kA and focused to a 3 micron rms spot size gives intensities of .10 W/cm at a repetition rate of .10 Hz. Unlike a ps or fs laser pulse which interact...

An intense, high-energy electron or positron beam can have focused intensities rivaling those of today's most powerful laser beams. For example, the 5 ps (FWHM), 50 GeV beam at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) at 1 kA and focused to a 3 micron rms spot size gives intensities of > 10 W/cm at a repetition rate of > 10 Hz. Unlike a ps or fs laser pulse which interacts with the surface...
متن کاملFuture beam experiments in the magnetosphere with plasma contactors: The electron collection and ion emission routes
Experiments where a high-voltage electron beam emitted by a spacecraft in the low-density magnetosphere is used to probe the magnetospheric configuration could greatly enhance our understanding of the near-Earth environment. Their challenge, however, resides in the fact that the background magnetospheric plasma cannot provide a return current that balances the electron beam current without char...
